BOOK SYNOPSIS

I have a secret.
A secret that no-one besides my boyfriend, my mother and I know. A secret from my past which has me trapped in a relationship from hell.
Refusing to tell a soul, I’ve kept it balled up inside for the past few years, trying to seem composed for the world while my reality was the complete opposite. I gave up on any hopes of a different life. A life where love and happiness existed. Alex, personally saw to it himself. He made sure it was drilled deep within my brain. This was the hand that life had dealt me. The life I learned to accept.
Until the day I bumped into Nick.
A gorgeous man who's haunted my thoughts and awakened my desires. A man, whose persistence turned my world upside down, more than it already was. The same man who also happened to be my boss and had a secret of his own. A secret that I couldn't decipher, even when it stood right in front of me. A secret that would blow me away.
My name is Tara and this is my story.

BOOK INFORMATION

TITLE – Tutankhamen Speaks SERIES – The Quest Books Companion to Sons of the Sphinx AUTHOR – Cheryl Carpinello GENRE – Historical Fiction Ancient Civilizations PUBLICATION DATE –Jan. 2014 LENGTH – 80 pages PUBLISHER – Beyond Today Educator COVER ARTISTRita Toews

BOOK SYNOPSIS

2014 EVVY Merit Award for Historical Fiction from CIPA (Colorado Independent Publishers Assoc.)
Long ago the old texts of ancient Egypt alluded to scrolls in which King Tut spoke to the people from beyond the tomb. Many archeologists put this down to an incorrect translation of the ancient Egyptian texts. Others swore to the accuracy of the translation. None of that mattered because the scrolls in question could not be found. Scholars labeled it a hoax, something that never existed. It was ludicrous to imagine someone speaking from the grave. They were wrong on both accounts.

EXCERPT

From his childhood:
My Grandmother
My nursemaid was Maya, but it was my Grandmother Tiye that I remember the most. She doted on me when she visited and showered me with motherly love. She appointed herself and her brother Ay as my protectors, but Grandmother was away a lot. After my father became Pharaoh, she continued to oversee the military as she did for my grandfather Amenhotep III. When I was small, she cut off a lock of her reddish-gold hair and concealed it inside of four small nesting sarcophagus coffins.
“Tutankhaten,” she said. “In the innermost sarcophagus I have placed a lock of my hair which rests underneath a solid gold statue of you. Keep the coffins safe and hidden in your room. They will protect you when I am unable to.”
I thanked her and prized such a gift, not only for protection, but because my grandmother’s gift was wonderfully made. The outer sarcophagus was made of wood; the second of plaster covered with gold leaf; the third of wood which contained the solid gold statue of myself; the fourth again of plaster covered with gold leaf and containing my grandmother’s gift.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Phoebe lives in a harbor town with her adopted father, Daniel. It’s been 200 years since the apocalypse, and the Land is ruled by the Council of God: a heavy-handed theocracy.
Phoebe doesn’t know why she’s plagued by thoughts, images, and feelings from the people around her. For her, it’s a constant battle just to survive the chaos they bring, and to hide her strangeness from the Council. In fact she’s the unwitting product of a genetic engineering program run by the Order, an organization driven into hiding almost 18 years before the story begins.
The Balance is Phoebe’s story, and the first installment about the Order’s struggle to return from exile, to bring the technologies of the past, and to rekindle the agreement reached with the Council after the war’s destruction—an agreement called The Balance.

EXCERPT

It was difficult to tell what color the walls might originally have been. Every available surface was covered with pictures— charcoal and pencil drawings, watercolor and oil paintings. They hung without apparent plan or order, and the pages were many layers deep in most places. Each morning her eyes sought out these familiar images—reminders of a thousand nights of terror.
But for Phoebe they were strangely comforting, a record of the many things she’d survived.
Her father, Daniel, was asleep in the old rocking chair near the window, his head rested on his chest, and he was snoring softly. The sound of his breathing had let her know he was there through the night, and helped her sleep again. Daniel had come when he’d heard her screaming—just as he always had.
The rocker stood sentry in a triangular niche attached to the east side of the room, where the walls came together in an unusual mixture of oblique and sharp angles. To Phoebe, the area had always seemed an afterthought, an eccentricity added to an otherwise normal space. She thought that it made for an odd room and was well suited for her—an odd room for an odd girl.

EXCERPT

“Will you just leave already?” I demand, swiping at my tears and feel the welcomed anger eclipse the pain of hurt. Orion looks at me in surprise for a moment then his eyes darken, determination setting in, there is no other way to describe it. He nods once then climbs over the bed and backs me against the wall, crowding me in. “Now you listen, Tiger, I thought I had made myself abundantly clear, and I don’t wish for you to misunderstand again.” Orion takes a deep breath as I hardly dare to breathe. “I have loved you almost since that first look where you sized me up, your amazing mind deciding whether or not to rabbit. I have loved you almost from the moment you looked at me with those big, beautiful eyes, confused as I called you beautiful.” His finger gently caresses my cheek and jawbone. Feeling slightly light headed from lack of oxygen, I suck in a deep breath, letting it out shakily as I see the emotion he talks of in his eyes. “I have loved you from the moment you cared for Lothar, a male you didn’t know, as sweetly as if he were your lover. You are beautiful, honest, and have the tenderest heart of anyone I know. I want to be around you and with you more than anyone else in my life.” Orion pauses, and after a deep breath, he cups my face in his big hands and breathes, “I love you, Mallory, please believe me.” He wipes the tears that are still falling from my cheeks with his thumbs, looking intently at me as I sputter, “But . . . but there is nothing here for you.” He frowns for a second then seems to understand what I am saying. “That’s why you are hurting.” He pulls me into his arms, holding me close, and it feels like he is putting me back together, one piece at a time. His expression is pained when he pulls back. “There is nothing for me to do here, for the moment, that’s what I meant. I just want you safe, I don’t know how I could live if something happened to you.” Relief so great spreads through me making my body tingle, and I slump a little realizing that what I heard was not at all what he meant, and after the relief comes the familiar love that I have been pushing back. “I love you too, Orion. Though it scares me,” I whisper. Orion tenses then forces my chin up to look at him. “I would never leave you willingly, never. I want all of you, always.”

CHARACTER BIOS

Rosa: Hi! I’m Rosa. I’m 15 years old and a sophomore in high school. I’m your typical teenager—well, almost. I don’t have many friends anymore, but it’s hard to blame the other kids. If I was them, I’d probably steer clear of me too, at least most of the time. No one is ever mean to me; I’ve grown up with most of them, and on my bad days, they try to ignore me. Wish I could do the same to those who talk to me. Mostly I just shake my head and carry on. It helps that I have a sarcastic sense of humor.
My daily life consists of trying to pass all my classes, getting a date for school dances, and dealing with Nana’s gift nearly every day while I try not to lose my mind.
Tut: My name is Nebkheperure Tutanhkame. I ascended the throne of Egypt upon the death of my father, Pharaoh Akhenaten. There has been much speculation in modern day on my death. My concern is finding the final resting place of my beloved queen, Ankhesenamun and making right that which was wronged centuries ago.

EXCERPT

Before us, nearly filling up the room and taller than either of us, stands the golden shrine of Tutankhamun. I remembered what else lay in that room. Inside that shrine are three more, each a bit smaller than the outside one. All tucked inside each other like those nesting dolls from my grandmother’s childhood. Inside the last shrine were the four sarcophagi of Tut, each displaying him in golden and jeweled splendor.
The last one holds the famed mask of the golden boy. And beneath that, the body of the young pharaoh who now stands here before me. Beyond my understanding, he has been given back his human form, allowed to return one last time to restore honor to his family, one last time to find his true love. And here I am, trying to help, trying to understand, trying to stay alive. Will I ever be able to go home again? Or will I become as lost as Hesena?

Excerpts

Sailing toy boats
When I was small, palace carpenters made me toy boats. Sometimes these were made to resemble the barges that would carry crops and animals down and up the Nile from one settlement to another. Some were fully outfitted royal barges complete with sails and the poles used when the barge was moving up river. I started playing with these in the palace pools. Later, as I got better at loading them and maneuvering them, I would find a place near the palace where the Nile ran slower. There I would dig out canals for the boats to float in. Sometimes Ankhesenpaaten would help me. One time we had so many canals built that it took all afternoon for our crop barges and the royal barges to enter into the canal system and then sail through and re-enter the Nile. I loved those days with Ankhesenpaaten by the Nile.

A fun romantic comedy and a classic beach romance!
From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author GINNY BAIRD, a heartfelt and hilarious tale about two lost souls finding their way to each other.
Allison Murphy spends a week in March with the same group of girlfriends each year. What started as a college spring break tradition morphed into an annual reunion, ultimately encompassing boyfriends and husbands. Only Allison hasn’t brought along a love interest in years, inspiring the others toward goodwill efforts at fixing her up. Faced with the prospect of yet another beach week mismatched with a virtual stranger, Allison’s roommate Kate suggests a shocking alternative. Allison can “borrow” Kate’s handsome and successful boyfriend for the trip. The trouble is Grady O’Brien stands for everything romantic idealist Allison is against. He’s a ruthless businessman who will stop at nothing to get ahead. What Allison doesn’t understand is just how far Grady is willing to go…
Wine industry entrepreneur Grady O’Brien knows an opportunity when he sees one. Allison Murphy runs a boutique wine label design company, while Grady heads up a firm that buys those sorts of businesses out. When Grady’s girlfriend unexpectedly must attend a conference and their vacation plans are cancelled, she encourages Grady to accompany Allison to the beach instead. Grady agrees to participate in the ruse of playing Allison’s boyfriend with a secret agenda in mind. He hopes to pave the way for acquiring Allison’s Bella Fortuna Wines by winning favor with its pretty owner and her friends. The one thing Grady doesn’t count on losing in the bargain is his heart.

EXCERPT

The waitress arrived speedily with their check and laid it on the table before hustling away to refill another customer’s coffee.
Grady was quick on the draw with his wallet.
“Here,’” Allison protested. “Let me!” But when she snapped open her purse it tipped sideways on the table then somersaulted onto the floor. Allison stared aghast at the mound of personal belongings that had landed on the carpet by her open bag that gaped wide like a landed fish. There in a heap were her wallet, a pack of tissues, lipstick, sunglasses, a chewing gum container, assorted wrappers, the ibuprofen bottle and…
“Eeek!” She dove onto the grimy carpet and got down on her hands and knees, scraping it all together.
Grady’s head dipped below the table. “Can I help you down there?”
Allison stared in mortification at the blatant box of condoms clutched in her hands, then tried to cover the label with her fingers. “Er, no thanks.”
Grady’s forehead rose. “Looks like you came prepared.”
“These aren’t mine!” she blubbered. “Actually, they’re yours!” Her face steamed. “For you!” That hadn’t come out right at all. What she meant was Kate had asked her to buy them for him, or for Kate and him! Oh, she didn’t know!
Grady grinned and her heart hammered.
“Sorry, Allison. I’m taken.”

CHARACTER BIOS

GRADY O’BRIEN – Wine Entrepreneur – Age 32 Tall, dark and sexy Grady O’Brien doesn’t play games that he can’t win. So when he signs up for a week of playing Allison’s fake boyfriend with a covert mission of taking over her company, he confidently predicts success. Of Irish decent and with slate blue eyes, Grady has faith in his powers of persuasion. He’s made a mint running a huge wine wholesaler, and keeps his 6 ft. 1 in. bod buff by restoring the 1920s Craftsman style house he bought and with rugged hiking and camping expeditions into the mountains. But beneath his tough exterior, Grady harbors an ultra personal secret—one that even his girlfriend Kate doesn’t know. Only the woman who can unlock it can find the way to his heart. Is it possible that person is someone who is his polar opposite? The totally free-spirited, disorganized and emotional Allison Murphy?
ALLISON MURPHY – Wine Label Designer and Small Business Owner – Age 29 Pretty and talented Allison Murphy has long blond hair, bright blue eyes and an artistic bent. She runs her own wine label design company, and due to some personal history has an extreme dislike of all things “big business.” This includes people like the very arrogant, yet admittedly hot, Grady O’Brien, who is obviously used to getting his way both on and off the job. Still, she’s in a pinch so agrees to let him play her boyfriend for the annual beach week she spends with her overly eager matchmaking girlfriends. They’re always trying to fix her up, but Allison doesn’t believe true love can be orchestrated that way. When the right guy comes along—as delivered by the fates—she’ll just know it. What Allison never expects is to find herself developing real feelings for the object of her pretend affections: the strong, sure and temptingly attractive Grady O’Brien.
